Great Swamp Battle
- Plymouth colonists, including Church and Moseley, attacked a Narrangansetts Fort - 3000 men, women, and children were taking shelter inside. - Colonial men broke down the fort after losing their commanding officer. - Church and his men attacked the Narrangansetts who ran to the outside and attacked from the forrest. - Moseley ordered to burn down the fort with all provisions, women, children, and elderly still inside. - 20% of colonial soldiers were killed or wounded. - Church suffered a gunshot wound to the hip. - First major win for Plymouth colony |
Battle of Mount Hope
- This is the battle that ended the war. - Occured at Mount Hope, Rhode Island - Benjamin Church led his group of men, including a group of Sakonnet warriors, on a search for King Philip. - Philip was found hiding in a swamp with few of his most loyal men. - King Philip attempted to flee from the attack but was shot by a Pocaset Indian named Alderman. Fun Fact! It was predicted that no Englishman would kill King Philip, before the war began. Philip took this to mean that he wouldn't be killed during the war, he was wrong but the prediction was correct. Philip wasn't killed by an Englishman but a Pocaset Indian. |
