King Philip- The Son of Massasoit
- His original name was Metacom - Became sachem (leader) of the Wampanoag after the death of his brother. - Leader of his tribe and several others during the war. - Started the war to avenge his brother's death and pressure from his people. - Cut his coat into pieces to secure alliances with surrounding tribes, which was a sign of respect. Benjamin Church- He was a 33 year old carpenter at the start of the war.
- He had a son and pregnant wife, who gave birth during the war. - He believed in using Native American allies and their tactics to win. - Not much military experience prior to the conflict. - Attempted to get the Pocassett and Sakonnet on the side of the colonists. - He was a trusted advisor of Josiah Winslow, the governor of Plymouth. - Enjoyed fighting in battles but often acted too quickly. - Moved his family to Aquidneck Island towards the end of the war to prevent them from being attacked. Samuel Moseley- Ship Captain before the war.
- Led a band of violent men, several who had been captured pirates. - Much better adapted to fighting the Wampanoag ambush tactics. - Used a pack of dogs in battle. - Killed Praying Indians, who were allies of the colonists. - Hated all Native Americans. - Related to the governor and believed he could do whatever he wanted during the war. - Considered a "war hero" during the conflict. Wamsutta- Son of Massasoit
- Brother of King Philip - Captured by the Plymouth colonists because of a rumor started by the Narranganssetts. - Died after catching a disease in colonial custody - His death resulted in Philip's war. Josiah Winslow- Second generation colonist.
- Harvard educated and wealthy - His father, Edward Winslow, had good relations with the Native Americans but he did not. - He was the man responsible for imprisoning Wamsutta, to show their power. - Had a very bad relationship with King Philip - The first elected governor of Plymouth Colony 1673 - He was appointed Commander of the New England forces during the war. Awashonks- Female sachem of the Sakonet
- Wanted to stay out of the conflict - Forced into war by her angry people - Switched sides by the end of the war - Discussed with Benjamin Church about joining Plymouth colony. |
